The Perfect Palette

Casey’s sister, Ate Janice, recommended a few days ago that I check out http://www.theperfectpalette.com/, a web site that helps people come up with color motifs for weddings and other parties. It’s so cute! I spent several hours reading through the articles. This site would be especially helpful to those who have difficulty visualizing their ideas, or those who are not particularly in touch with their “artistic” side (like me hehe). What’s nice is they even include mood boards for every color scheme. I found one that’s pretty similar to mine, and I hope it will help me flesh out my ideas even further. Our Pamamanhikan

Last Sunday, October 13, we had our pamamanhikan, which is a tradition in the Philippines wherein the groom, accompanied by his family, visits the bride and her family to formally ask the bride’s parents for their blessing.

Here is a definition taken from kasal.com:

From the word panik (which means to ascend or to climb a house’s flight of stairs), pamamanhikan is “the asking for the girl’s parents’ permission to wed the affianced pair.” The custom symbolizes honor and respect for the parents, seeking their blessing and approval before getting married.

Prior to our pamamanhikan, we had already received the blessing of our parents, and so last Sunday’s affair was more of a casual getting-to-know-you dinner than a formal and strict gathering.

We held the dinner at my older sister Melay’s house in Makati. This is the house I grew up in. We chose this as our venue so that it would be equally accessible to all (most of my family on my mother’s side live in Marikina, whereas Casey’s family lives in Las Piñas. Also, my lola lives in this house and cannot travel far very often). It was a good decision, particularly because no one was in a hurry to leave.  🙂

Some couples include only the immediate family in the pamamanhikan, but in our case, my mama invited her sisters and their families, which made for a fun gathering! A few of my cousins who are currently staying with my lola joined the merriment as well. Then for Casey’s family, aside from his mother, father, sister, brother, and brother’s wife, his tita (mother’s sister) to whom he is particularly close was also present.

The affair was supposed to be a merienda cena (snack before dinner), but naturally, it became more of an early dinner because of the amount of food involved (Filipinos love to eat). Casey brought Korean beef stew (he loves to cook and is great at it!). Casey’s family brought spaghetti, shanghai rolls, vegetable lumpia, coffee jelly, bibingka, and beer. My mama brought carbonara and crabstick mango salad. My papa brought wine. My sister Melay prepared fish fingers. My titas brought fish, fried chicken, and espasol. Yummy!

We started eating at around 6 pm. The food was not only high in quantity but in quality as well! Several recipes were exchanged between the two families. 🙂

Since we had already received the blessing of our parents, the time after dinner was spent discussing our plans for the wedding and after the wedding. We shared our ideas and experiences canvassing for potential wedding suppliers, and our family gave us suggestions and advice.

The pamamanhikan made me realize that we are so lucky that my family and his family are both happy for us and willing to help in the planning process. One major reason I decided to create this blog is so that I can ensure that our families can be constantly updated on our wedding preparations.

I think that everyone was pleased with how the pamamanhikan turned out. Thank you to Melay for letting us hold the event at her house. And thank you to everyone who was there to support us and help in our plans! 🙂

BOOKED: St. John Bosco Parish

Woohoo! We’ve finalized our date and booked our Church! It’s official–we’re tying the knot on October 11, 2014. 🙂

We went to Don Bosco earlier, arriving at around 11:45 am. Unfortunately, the lunch break of the parish office is 11:30 am to 12:30 pm (take note of this if you are looking to book this Church). And so we decided to eat at Amici first.

Finally, Casey was able to try Amici! My family loves it there. We always order the spinach cannelloni. But since earlier, we could order good for only two people, we decided to get just the four cheese pizza and espresso gelato. Yummy!

After eating, we went to the parish office and filled up some forms. Then we paid the downpayment of Php2000, and successfully reserved our date. 🙂

For those who are considering getting married at the Don Bosco Church, here are our top five reasons for choosing this Church:

1. Aircon (non-negotiable because we both sweat easily)

2. Aisle that is just the right length (not too short that my bridal march will not reach the song’s chorus and not too long that my feet will start to ache)

3. Beautiful altar (refer to my first post)

4. Just the right size (not as small as Paco Park Chapel where some people will have to stand and not as large as Manila Cathedral where there will be more pews than people. haha)

5. Relatively affordable (cheaper than most aircon churches)

The only con for me is that it has a glass door (so it does not offer a dramatic entrance of the door being opened especially for the bride), but they have an option of using sheer white curtains to make the bride’s entrance special.

Tomorrow, we are going to play for a wedding again. Yay! I hope we get some more great ideas from that gig.

Our Wedding Theme

Our theme has evolved from wild jungle to safari chic and now to golden forest. I hope it stops there! I’ve created a mood board for the golden forest theme to generate a clearer idea of the wedding we are going to have. Aside from gold, I want to incorporate shades of mint green and possibly teal in the color scheme. I think all soon-to-wed couples should create a mood board so that they avoid getting overwhelmed by all the possibilities! Thank you to Ate Janice, (Casey’s sister) for suggesting that I come up with a mood board. 🙂

I love the color teal! 🙂 I hope our theme doesn’t change anymore, because I am starting to really dig this golden forest theme. It is simple and elegant. I haven’t seen a wedding with this theme here in the Philippines, so I hope K by C, our caterer, will be excited about executing the styling. 🙂

Serendipity: The Search for a Church and Caterer is Over!

I am so lucky to have a fiance who cares about the wedding just as much as (if not more than) I do. Since we got engaged last month, we have been to two bridal fairs, two food tasting sessions, eight churches, and ten reception venues. Not once was I left alone to canvas. Aside from that, Casey spends more time than I do reading all the wedding forums! He is truly excited about this planning stage. 🙂

Aside from his enthusiasm, I am also thankful that we want the same kind of wedding. We have the same vision, and so it’s easy for us to agree on our shortlist for the venues and other suppliers. Although we do have some disagreements, the biggest one I remember was about the number of entourage members (which is really not that difficult to get around).

Having said that, as early as now, one month after our engagement, we have already done a lot of work. We have chosen our church (Don Bosco), and we are picking between two reception venues (Forbes Park Pavilion and Urdaneta Friendship Hall). We have chosen our caterer (K by Cunanan). We have #1 prospects for our photo and video teams (Ruffa and Mike Photography and Jake Olaso Wedding Films). We have not booked any of them yet, but we have inquired regarding our potential dates and hope to secure these suppliers by next week.

I actually started this blog late (a month after Casey proposed), and I am now starting to regret it. I realized that we have already been through so many experiences planning for the wedding, and at this point, I cannot document all of them! So my advice is do not delay in creating a wedding blog, because it’s important to preserve the details of your preparations. It’s up to you how much you will put in the blog (some are really dedicated to updating it, and I don’t think I will be super dedicated but I will try my best), but really, something is better than nothing.

So anyway, the main topic of this post is the day that we decided our church and caterer. Last Saturday, October 12, we went to a bridal fair at PICC. We did not stay long, as it was already our second fair and thus, we already had the brochures of most of the suppliers. In the afternoon, we had a wedding gig (we played in a string quartet). The couple exchanged vows at (surprise surprise) St. John Bosco Parish Church in Makati. Before that Saturday, my #1 choice was Magallanes Church (because of the drama offered by their great big wooden door). However, last Saturday’s wedding gig allowed us to see Don Bosco Church set up for a wedding. It was soooo pretty. The periphery of the Church was adorned with sheer white curtains. My favorite part of the Church is the altar. It is so simple yet absolutely stunning. I realized that even if Don Bosco has no wooden door that will be opened especially for my entrance, I would definitely love to walk down their aisle and gaze at their altar on my wedding day.

The reception was held at One Esplanade, and the caterer (to our luck) was our #1 prospect, K by Cunanan! The set-up of the place was gorgeous. Before we started playing our set, my fiance Casey approached one of the waiters to ask if the set-up was just the basic set-up or if it were already upgraded. The waiter asked if we were among the guests. When Casey told him that we were part of the string quartet, the waiter was delighted; again to our luck, the waiter was actually the head waiter! He ordered another waiter to bring us drinks and pica-pica. And then later on, when it was time for our dinner, in addition to the allotted crew meal, the head waiter brought us desserts and salad! Before that evening, we bemoaned the fact that the earliest possible date for our initial food tasting session is this coming October 24 still, but last Saturday felt like a food tasting session anyway and made us even more determined to book K by C. After the sumptuous dinner, we were able to chat with the K by C event associate (EA), Monique. She informed us that the lovely set-up involved no upgrade (yay) and gave us a lot of further information on K by C. We were so excited that we wanted to book K by C on the spot with Monique as our EA. However, she advised us to stick with the EA who scheduled our food tasting session (Nina). Casey was uneasy about this, because he was already comfortable with Monique. But guess what? Our luck had not yet run out. The very next day, we wanted to ask K by C about their availability for the two dates we are currently eyeing. So we went to the PICC bridal fair again, and while Casey drove around, I went to the K by C booth. Lo and behold, who should I find there but Nina! She was very cheerful and accommodating, and so Casey’s apprehensions have been appeased. We can’t wait for our food tasting session with Nina on October 24! 🙂
